John Gruber’s Piece On Leopard That I Read Today Made A Very Interesting Case For Time Machine’s UI

That is, that the gimmick and slickness of the said interface actually helped make its somber and esoteric nature more friendly and approachable to the eye of casual users; so they, too, can experience the joy of not freaking out at 2 am. To quote:

Apple has made something so effect-laden and so extraordinary that users want to see it in action — the fact that that something is backups, which, let’s face it, is effectively a chore, is a noteworthy achievement…The argument for Time Machine’s game-like UI isn’t that it’s more usable, but that more people will use it

Conclusion:

  1. Context reigns over consistency, and
  2. The Shiny UI will only help those with noble enough intention. Otherwise…
